Ignited by the burning desire to improve the condition of the people of North Karnataka, who were stricken by poverty, ignorance and illiteracy, seven dedicated teachers, fondly called as "Saptarishis", sacrificing their bright prospects of lucrative jobs in British Government, realised the importance of lack of education as the root cause of backwardness, set out on a singular mission to provide education and sowed the seeds of Karnataka Lingayat Education (KLE) Society in 1916, which has germinated and grown into a massive "Kamadhenu" tree, giving shade, flowers and fruits of knowledge, skills and prosperity to generations of citizens, transforming the educationally and economically barren land into lush green pasture. In the last 97 years, many have nurtured the KLE Society. The growth was slow and cautious in the first seventy years. The rapid and unprecedented spurt of growth and development of the KLE Society in the subsequent years, under the visionary leadership of Dr. Prabhakar Kore and the members of Board of Management, is a phenomenon to reckon with; crossing the geographical limits, the KLE Society has carved enviable niche in the global map of Education and Health Care.

Born in 1963, to become the jewel in the crown of KLE Society, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) is celebrating Golden Jubilee in 2012-2013. Making a humble beginning in Lingaraj College, JNMC, was attached to Govt. District Hospital for clinical teaching. In 1986 the KLE Hospital and Medical Research Centre (MRC), was started (in the building, at present which houses VK Institute of Dental Sciences) and the clinical training was partly shifted. In 1996 the KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre was started which heralded a new era of KLE Society providing high quality health care to the common man at affordable cost. The clinical teaching was totally shifted and the District Hospital was disconnected in 2006, after the KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Charitable Hospital was commissioned which further strengthened the clinical training. University Grants Commission (UGC) granted Deemed University status to KLE Health institutes and JNMC became constituent institute of KLE University in 2006. This was another milestone achievement of KLE Society. Under the able leadership of Hon. Vice Chancellor Dr. C K Kokate, the University is set on the path of quest for excellence. In 2010 National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded 'A' Grade to the University, and in 2012, Ministry of Human Resource & Development (MHRD), Government of India has placed the University in 'A' category. JNMC is placed in one of the top Twenty Medical Colleges of India in a survey conducted by Outlook Magazine.

JNMC now stands as a monument and testimony to the commitment and dedication of few principals, many faculty members and innumerable others including the office staff who have served the institution and nurtured it. Golden Jubilee is the occasion to pay tribute to all of them. The students contribution to the JNMC cannot be overemphasised; over 10,000 Graduate and Post Graduate alumni, spread the world all over, are proud brand ambassadors of JNMC; among them are the specialists who are occupying chairs in some of the world's leading institutions, researchers, scientists, teachers who are decorated with National and International awards and the doctors who take care of the health of generations of people.

KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and MRC and Charitable Hospital, providing clinical training facility to JNMC students, are a unique combination of cost-effective corporate health care and free health care, fulfilling the social obligation of KLE Society towards equity in the distribution of health care. Out of a total of 2,200 beds, 1,200 beds are totally free. With 12 general and eight super specialities, the hospital is recognised as tertiary care referral hospital to look up to.

"Suvarna JNMC" celebrations started in November 2012, will last for one year. Several activities are planned to mark the golden jubilee; all departments will organise CME's, workshops and conferences; our alumni will be the resource persons for most of these programs; a village is adopted for comprehensive development; a medical exhibition, students fest and alumni meet along with valedictory are scheduled in August, October and December 2013 respectively. A 250 bed new ward called 'Suvarna JNMC ward' is commissioned. An oncology unit, a swimming pool, convention centre and a faculty club are under construction; all of them will add to the international ambience of the sprawling, unitary, self-contained, campus of 110 acres, housing medical, dental, pharmacy, physiotherapy and nursing colleges, music school, hostels, residential quarters, auditorium, indoor sports complex, stadium, library, places of worship, banks, post office, ATMs, restaurants and other amenities; a garden with musical fountain is possession of our pride.

Quest for quality is unending. Vision of the visionaries has no limits. "Saptarishis" blessings are unstoppable. JNMC has a long way to go. "Woods are lovely, dark and deep and I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep" epitomises the journey ahead of the institution. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, the right step taken in the right direction at the right time.
